Rats

Brown and black rats move into warehouses, basements, livestock facilities, and homes. They ruin stored goods, gnaw through wiring and packaging, and carry the pathogens of dangerous infections. Rats are handled with baits in several formats and with glue traps — the choice depends on the site.

About the pest

Rats are the most cautious of the synanthropic rodents: they steer clear of new objects and new food for several days, so controlling them takes both a properly chosen bait and patience. Rats settle wherever there is food and shelter: food warehouses, granaries, farms, basements, and utility spaces.

The damage rats do is twofold. First, spoiled goods: gnawed packaging and contaminated stock lose their salable condition and are written off. Second, risks to the site itself: damaged wiring is one of the causes of fires, and the animals themselves carry leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and other pathogens.

Systematic protection uses rodenticide baits — grain, dough baits, and wax blocks — and glue traps where baits are undesirable. Wax blocks resist moisture and suit basements and outdoor points; grain and dough baits are attractive in dry spaces.

Place bait where the signs are: along walls, by burrows, behind equipment.
Top the points up until feeding stops — a colony is cleared in 1–2 weeks.
Change the bait format if feeding is weak: rats have pronounced food preferences.
Use products strictly according to the instructions on the pack.

A single pair of rats can produce several dozen offspring in a year — if you have seen one, count on a colony.

Wary of anything new

Rats spend several days "testing" new objects and new food — bait needs time, and that is normal.
