Ants
House ants build their nests inside floor slabs and walls, and the workers beat trails to the food. Killing the ants running about is almost pointless — what works is gel baits, which the workers carry into the nest themselves, along with sprays and traps.
About the pest
Ants come with one fundamental feature: the insects you see are only workers, while the colony and its queen sit hidden somewhere out of reach. As long as the queen is alive, every worker killed is replaced by a new one, so a spray on its own solves the problem only locally and only for a while.
The main weapon against ants is gel bait: the workers take it for food, carry it into the nest, and feed the colony, the queen included. The colony dies out completely within one or two weeks. Sprays are appropriate for quickly clearing trails and single insects, and glue traps for keeping numbers in check and for monitoring.
At home ants spoil food, and in food service and retail their appearance is a sanitary risk: the insects travel between waste and clean surfaces.
- Apply the gel in drops directly on the ant trails and by their exit points.
- Do not wash the trails away before applying the gel — the workers will use them to bring the "food" back to the nest.
- Put away open food and anything sweet: the gel has to stay the most available food there is.
- Use products strictly according to the instructions on the pack.
Worth knowing
The colony matters, not the individuals
The ants you see are workers. As long as the queen is alive in the nest, killing the ones "running about" changes nothing.
Gel works through the nest
Workers carry the bait to the queen and the brood — the colony dies out completely in 1–2 weeks.
The trails are a map
Ants follow pheromone trails. Apply the gel directly on their routes — the effect comes faster.

Ants travel between waste and food, carrying contamination onto clean surfaces.
