Prevention costs less than control. But how much less?
The difference is not a fixed multiple; it depends on how the population grows.
The claim that prevention is more cost-effective than control may sound like a truism. But it has a very concrete basis, which explains why the difference is so great.
Pest numbers do not grow linearly. Given food and warmth, a pair of mice produces offspring every three weeks, and those offspring become capable of breeding after about two months. A cockroach ootheca contains dozens of eggs, and the cycle repeats. Delaying action therefore means not just a little extra work, but many times more.
The second factor is the damage already done by the time the problem is discovered. Spoiled and contaminated products, damaged packaging, gnawed wiring and insulation — and, at food facilities, reputational consequences following an inspection or complaint. None of this is reversed by subsequent treatment.
The third factor is the cost of the measures themselves. Prevention consists of inexpensive steps that need to be taken only once: fitting mesh to ventilation openings, installing a brush strip on a door, sealing a pipe penetration, mowing grass along a wall, keeping the waste collection area tidy, and leaving space between goods and walls. Controlling an established population requires repeated treatments, facility downtime, disposal of damaged goods, and months of monitoring until the population has been eliminated.
The practical conclusion for a business is that a regular inspection of the perimeter once a month and of monitoring points every two weeks takes only a few hours. This is nothing compared with what will be required if seasonal entry goes unnoticed and is not discovered until spring.
