Treatment where there are children and pets

Most unpleasant incidents begin not with the product itself but with where it was placed.

Household safety is usually reduced to choosing a "safer" product. In practice, the risk depends less on its composition than on how the product is placed and what happens after treatment.

There is one basic rule: the bait must be accessible to the pest and inaccessible to everyone else. Almost everything else follows from this.

Enclosed formats were designed for precisely this purpose. A bait station allows a rodent or cockroach to enter while keeping children and cats out. In a home with both children and pets, this is not excessive caution — it is standard practice.

Bitrex deserves particular mention in connection with rodenticide baits. This bittering agent is added to make the bait taste repellent to people and pets without affecting its attractiveness to rodents. It does not provide absolute protection, but it significantly reduces the risk of accidental ingestion.

Precautions to follow regardless of the format:

  • wear gloves when placing bait — both for hygiene and to preserve palatability;
  • place it behind furniture and appliances and in utility recesses, not on exposed surfaces;
  • keep a record of all bait placements so that every one can be collected at the end of treatment;
  • store the packaging away from food and out of reach of children.

One general point: the instructions on the packaging are not a formality. Usage rates, restrictions, and precautions are stated explicitly, and following them is easier than dealing with the consequences.
