Moths: why you notice them more in autumn

Moths: why you notice them more in autumn

Heating season creates ideal conditions for moths — warmth and no disturbance.

Moths do not vanish in summer or appear in fall — it is just that once heating season starts, apartments and warehouses settle into stable warmth and quiet, which is exactly what they need. Fall is also when seasonal clothes go into closets and grain supplies get restocked — creating precisely the environment they thrive in.

It helps to distinguish two different pests lumped under one word. The clothes moth damages wool, fur, and other natural fibers — and it is not the adult that ruins things but its larvae. The pantry moth lives in grains, flour, dried fruit, and nuts, and is usually discovered by the webbing and clumps in the package.

What helps:

  • store only clean clothes — human scent attracts moths more than the fabric itself;
  • keep grains in tightly closed containers, not factory bags;
  • check the far corners of closets and the top shelves from time to time;
  • at the first signs, go through the supplies completely, not selectively.

Among products for living spaces, traps and sticky ribbons are the most convenient: they require no surface treatment and reveal the scale — the number caught shows at once whether the problem is local or has spread.
