In August you're working ahead of the problem; in October you're catching up.
The annual migration begins in mid-August: nights grow colder, crops are harvested, the food supply disappears, and rodents head for places that offer warmth and food. What happens next depends on whether the premises are prepared for them.
The difference between August and October is fundamental. In August, you are dealing with scouts — individual animals looking for a suitable place. In October, you are dealing with an established population already breeding in the warmth. The labour involved differs severalfold.
The sequence of work in August remains the same year after year: first seal entry routes, then remove food sources and shelter, and only then set out bait. Reversing the order works poorly: bait in a building that new rodents can enter freely becomes an endless feeding station.
When choosing a product format, keep the conditions of use in mind. Soft dough baits remain attractive indoors and are readily eaten even when other food is available. Wax blocks are designed for outdoor use, moisture, and temperature fluctuations — they neither become soggy nor crumble, making them suitable for the perimeter, utility pits, and basements. Grain bait is closest to rodents' natural food and is appropriate wherever grain is present — at grain elevators, storage facilities, and farms.
